Humans influence each other, especially when they spend time together. Because we know this, it would stand to reason that we should be a bit choosy about who we spend our time with. The people you interact with most regularly have a significant power over your mood, success, and emotions. So choose people who build you up! Here’s how to surround yourself with uplifting people.
“If we surround ourselves with people who are successful, who are forward-moving, who are positive, who are focused on producing results, who support us, it will challenge us to be more and do more and share more. If you can surround yourself with people who will never let you settle for less than you can be, you have the greatest gift that anyone can hope for.” – Tony Robbins
Find People Who Share Your Values
Remember that we are influenced heavily by those we surround ourselves with. Make sure the people you spend the most time with actually share your values.
What’s most important to you in life? If your answer is your family, for example, it wouldn’t make sense to spend the majority of your time with someone who dislikes children. If health is a huge value in your life, you would find yourself dragged down if you choose to surround yourself with people who criticize healthy decisions and actions.
It’s fine if people have different opinions on a variety of things, but if you want to surround yourself with uplifting people, you need to make sure your core values match.
Find Those Who Are Doing What You Want to Do
Who are the leaders in your field?
Who has the knowledge you’d like to have? If you want to seek out uplifting people, find those who are already doing what you hope to be doing one day.
Want to own your own business? Find someone who is already doing that successfully.
Looking to market yourself more clearly and effectively? Find a successful marketer, and ask to take them to lunch.
Want to live a healthier lifestyle? Hire an expert, join a fitness group, or find a friend who knows what they’re doing.
Successful people want to see other people succeed. The right person will take time to share the lessons they learned from their mistakes, as well as hacks that help them work more efficiently.
Seek Out People Who Are Smarter Than You
Newsflash: You don’t know everything! (And that’s okay!)
We all have a lot of room for growth, and one way to surround yourself with uplifting people is to find people who know more than you.
This helps you push yourself and challenge yourself to learn more, to understand more, and to grow. Set your bar high, and then continue to raise it, by choosing friends, mentors, and colleagues who are smarter than you.
Give Back
Don’t keep all this goodness to yourself! When you help others grow, you grow.
If you want to surround yourself with uplifting people, be an uplifting person. Just like there are many who are further ahead in their success than you, you’re also further ahead on your journey than others.
Share your knowledge with those who want it.
Not only will you improve the world by putting goodness out there, but you’ll learn critical skills like teaching, mentoring, sharing, and even empathy as you listen to those you help.
Be a lifter, and everyone will benefit.
Curate Your Social Media
Social media can quickly drag us down as we compare ourselves to people who are further along in their success. Plus, some accounts are simply toxic in their approach.
Since social media is so pervasive, you owe it to yourself to seek out and follow people who inspire you — and unfollow people who bring you down.
Find the people who know what they’re talking about, and who inspire you to do better in positive ways.
Put Some Distance Between You and Those Who Would Bring You Down
Finally, examine the influences in your life, and be willing to step back from relationships that are causing you harm. You don’t have to mercilessly chop people out of your life; you can simply create distance when you need to.
How do you know if someone is holding you back? Pay attention to how you feel after spending time with them. Are you motivated, happy, and positive? Or do you feel unsure of yourself, lacking, and negative? Be courageous and examine these feelings.
At Impact Marketing and Design, we seek to uplift you and your company by helping you reach your goals. We start by finding out who you are and what you need. We care about you and your goals — whether that’s increasing sales, increasing exposure, or something else — and if we’re the right fit, we’ll bend over backwards to help you reach them.
