Honoring the Troops During Military Appreciation Month

Marketers and small business owners, ten-hut! Help your customers honor military soldiers and veterans. Culminating with Memorial Day, the month of May is National Military Appreciation Month. Take this opportunity to honor the brave men and women who have served and are currently in active service. Here are some of the popular ideas out there for starting your organization’s humble salute this month.
Decorate Accordingly
Just by seeing patriotic decor in your business location customers are not only reminded of the occasion, but also of the men and women of the military. Throughout the month of May, have an American flag prominently on display in your shop. A “Support Our Troops” flag will do nicely, too, as well as any patriotic or military uniform inspired decor you can find. Many businesses have gone as far as offering a themed product, like a red-white-and-blue dessert, for the occasion. Look around for what others in your industry have done before for inspiration. You can probably come up with a better idea for this year!
Offer a Military Discount
It’s easy enough to make a reality—decide on the rate of discount that’s feasible for your business and the validity period, and once decided, complete any required paperwork, inform your staff and put up signs announcing the discount. Take it one step further by having vouchers or postcards to distribute to customers throughout the month.
Host an Event
You don’t have to wait until Memorial Day to host an event for the troops and their families in your community. Depending on your audience and the demographic your business serves, you can, for example, choose to hold an event on Military Spouse Appreciation Day on the Friday before Mother’s Day or on Armed Forces Day. It doesn’t have to be a big event, either. A barbecue gathering in the park or a military dress up contest at your shop could be promising with proper planning and even some themed items to give away.
Send Care Packages
Military families in your community might like to send care packages to their loved ones who’ve been deployed. Why not help them out with one? Get inspiration from this list of cool military package ideas by The Military Wife and Mom for what to include in care packages (hint: toiletry kits are some of the most popular items). In contrast, the whisky maker Crown Royal has offered to send care packages to anonymous members of the troops. Whether you’re helping customers to send packages to their loved ones or to complete strangers in the military, your efforts are sure to remind them that they are much appreciated for their heroism.
