Labor Day Rewards for a Happier Workforce

Labor Day rewards for a happier workforce

Labor Day

Every year, as summer ends, the country pays tribute to hardworking Americans on Labor Day. The occasion was instituted in the late 1800’s as a way for labor unions to collectively find ways to improve their working conditions. Later on, it became a holiday to honor the efforts of laborers and workers and their contribution to our economy and society. As the 2018 celebration rolls around, businesses of all sizes can retrain their sights on the people who make their organizations prosper. After all, in this age of transparency, accountability, and authenticity, more and more customers wish to support businesses that showcase their values not just on the marketing shelves, but also within their own people.

Of course, good organizations already have practices in place to make their employees feel rewarded; but in the case of such a special occasion, it never hurts to do them an extra good deed or find ways to make them love working for you a little bit more. The benefits are well-documented: workers are more motivated and more invested in the team’s success, operational risks are limited, a culture of openness and innovation is created, cost-efficiency and hence revenues improve. These articles on The Balance and the Huffington Post offer some guidelines in giving rewards and incentives.

It doesn’t need to take much, too. Whether you are a micro, small, medium, or large enterprise, there are different ways for different budgets to give your team that extra boost. For your reference, we’ve rounded up a few ones.

There are many ways to find inspiration. For example, Labor Day is often marked by outdoor activities as a last hurrah to summer. A family picnic or barbecue with employees’ families can be a fun celebration. Let them take home a  picnic bag with some treats and picnic items inside as sweet reminders of a lovely day out.

It’s also the beginning of the fall season so autumn-themed rewards or gifts can make an impact. How about gifting your best employees with welcome-to-the-season candles for the home in cinnamon, apple, woods, or vanilla scent? Jackets with your brand are also a great token of appreciation that will invoke pride in the company.

For football fans, Labor Day also means the games are about to come afoot. You can have a football-themed day in the office with day-long competitions, major prizes, and a fun souvenir  or two. It’s also a three-day weekend that’s often marked with trips, parades, and other activities. Your rewards to your employees can be something they can use for going out of town, watching parades, or joining outdoor events. Remember to give these gifts with an “Enjoy your long weekend” message before the holiday begins.

Of course, your customers are also workers so it would be nice to also give them rewards that can help make their office lives easier.

At the end of the day, an employee that feels appreciated is much more invested in the success of the whole team. And as marketers in a time where consumers’ trust is king, how we treat our people becomes one of the best ways to sell or promote our business.
